Admissions Testing for Independent Schools

Children under the age of 6, or entering pre-school or kindergarten, will take the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV). Testing time typically runs 60-75 minutes and the fee is $375.

Children ages 6 and above, or entering first grade or above, take the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Testing time typically runs 60-90 minutes, and the fee is $400. We accept check or cash payments for admissions testing. No practice or preparation is necessary, and there is nothing you need to bring with you to the appointment. We generally prefer that you stay in the waiting room while your child is being tested.

When discussing this appointment with your child, it is best to tell them that they will be coming to the office to do educational activities or games. We encourage you to refer to your evaluator by their first name so that your child feels relaxed about the meeting. If your child wears glasses in school, please have them wear their glasses for testing. Medication should be taken just as on a regular day.

Upon completion of the assessment, a written report will be e-mailed to you within approximately one to two weeks after testing. If you are in need of the report more quickly, we can usually honor such requests, but ask that you let us know at the time of your initial call. The reports are detailed and will answer many of your questions; however, we are available to meet with you if you would like further explanation. There is an additional fee of $100 for a 30-minute consultation. We will also send the report to any schools you indicate on the form provided, free of charge.

Admissions testing is available for children who are required to take an individually administered aptitude test as part of the application process at many independent schools in the Washington, D.C. metro area. During testing, your child will be asked to participate in a series of activities that assess multiple areas of cognitive ability, such as logic, memory, and language. We strongly prefer that your child be tested in the morning to ensure optimal performance. I.Q. tests are not valid if your child has already taken them within the year, but the results of previous tests are usually accepted by the schools.

If your appointment needs to be canceled or rescheduled for any reason (e.g. child is sick) please call us immediately. We will do our best to accommodate you as soon as your child is well. We ask that you give us as much advance notice as possible about cancellations, so we can provide your time slot to another family.
